Sponsored Ride in Grimsthorpe Park 2011

Bank Holiday Monday (2 May 2011) sees the annual ‘Sponsored Ride’ taking place in theBythams area.  If you ride, the event, in its 9th year since it changed from being the ‘Hunter Trials’, is one not to miss.  The organisers have laid out 8, 12 and 15 mile courses in beautiful Grimsthorpe Park (all off public roads) and offer tea and cake, as well as toilets, at the mid-point!  In previous years partipants have remarked how enjoyable the event is and leave with a promise to return next year which over 200 did in 2009. Proceeds from the event go towards the maintenance of the churches in Careby, Creeton, Castle Bytham and Little Bytham and this years chosen ‘external’ charity – Kesteven Rideability based at Hough-on-the-Hill, near grantham, a Riding for the Disabled member.  If you’d like to take part it not too late to enter, contact Rosemary Player on 01778 590350. Steam Trains along the East Coast Mainline

Thanks to help from Chris Holmes, theBythams website now includes information, in its Railways, Trains etc. section, of steam rail tours which pass through Little Bytham on the East Coast Mainline.  Much of the information has been gleaned from the UK Steam Info website, supplemented by information from the websites of the companies organising the tours – primarily Steam Dreams, who manage the LNER Peppercorn Class A1 60163 Tornado, and The Railway Touring Company.

LNER A4 60019 Bittern passes through Little Bytham

The A4 locomotive 4464(60019) Bittern passed through Little Bytham this morning on the first day of a nine day Rail Touring CompanyGreat Britain IV” rail-tour.  The locomotive had been repainted in LNER Garter Blue and renamed Dominion of New Zealand specially for the trip.  In its new livery the locomotive is very much like its legendary A4 class mate the 4468 Mallard. The loco is seen above at Grantham station, photo courtesy of BBC Lincolnshire’s Facebook Page. Details of rail tours across the UK can be found at www.uksteam.info
